On Wednesday, August 27th, 2003 Lee (WA8MSD), Vicky (KB8HUZ) and Keith (WA8ZWJ) left Ohio to
come north to the Traverse City area to learn how to use downriggers and fish for King (Chinook) Salmon.
Our local IOOK guide was Cap'N Dave, W8TVC. He met with us Wednesday evening and told us what
types and color lures we would be needing as well as a few other items. As you can see from the
"Lee's catch" photo there were quite a few items on the list including a bigger net, downrigger fishing
poles, "Hoochie Momma's" and "Horse Fly's". Our first outing was Thursday evening after Dave got
off work. Cap'N Dave's favorite spot to fish is in East Bay just north of downtown Traverse City.
I have to say, a fun time was had by all!
The pictures are authentic. There were a total of 15 fish caught weighing in at 202 pounds!
Those of you who insist that these are the same fish made of cardboard will not be invited
to the fish fry. After all, we wouldn't want you to have to eat cardboard! Now, those of
you who are checking closely will notice that there are only 14 fish pictured. That I cannot
explain other than **** happens! Lee commented that he would never have expected
to be fishing with broomsticks that got bent and calling 10 pounders small!
Best 73 and good fishing!
