NN3V Goes Deep Sea Fishing

June 2007 Fishing Trip A Success

In Charlie, NN3V's own words...

Howdy:  Well, the party is over and what a party it was!!

Left the docks on the Motor Vessel Red Rooster III on June 22nd, and returned yesterday June 30th!

The weather and the fishing was simply over the top!  28 anglers onboard, and the boat simply could do no wrong.  We were graced with Captain John Grabowsky as the skipper of the trip.  He is a nationally known angler who spent many years running his own boat (Excel) and now is one of the local San Diego leaders in the recreational fishing business with his own radio show on NPR.

The trip took us 560 miles (498 Nautical miles) south of San Diego to Alijos Rocks, the remnants of an exploded volcano from long long ago in some 900 feet deep water.  We also fished along the “ridge” (the dividing line between shallow and deep water some 100 miles off the Baja peninsula), and on a couple of other seamounts in the vicinity of Cedros island.

The weather was simply spectacular.  Flat calm, clear skies, with temperatures ranging from 52F at night and early morning to 78F in the warmest part of the day.

Fishing consisted of trolling, dropper-loop fishing, and bait and jig casting.  The catch was enormous!

The boat caught (that is, every angler caught) limits on yellow-tail (15 fish per angler), Dorado (known and DO-DO locally or Mahi-mahi in Hawaii , 2 fish per angler), and then loads of yellow tail tuna.

Attached are some photos of the catch I brought back.  Total was 395 lbs, that converted to 175lb of fresh vacuum sealed and now frozen fillets that are in my freezer.

First photo is the yellow-fin tuna I caught with my new Accurate Boss 807 reel and new custom rod.  Tuna weighed 58 Lbs.

Second photo is a yellow-fin tuna caught on the kite. 68 Lbs.

Third photo is a shot of Alijos Rocks.  Those are the top of what remains of a volcano that exploded millions of years ago, and form a natural habitat for fishing.

The next photo is a shot of the contents of one of the holds (there are five of them on the boat) of Red Rooster III as we returned to San Diego .  You can imagine what the total catch would look like were it all laid out.

The last photo is the catch of your’s truly.  Just the fish that are directly in front of me is what I brought back.

All in all a fantastic trip, and I am already thinking of the next one!
