Dallas Hamcom 2010

posted 6/14/10

A number of IOOK'ers attended the Dallas Hamcom on Saturday, June 12, 2010.

Here is their account of the hamfest.

N5JFQ says "The IOOK does Dallas 2010!  Hoss was the first Texan we ran across."

L-R WA5FLT, WA5ZAI, N5JFQ

WA5FLT says "Here Al, AE5CJ, assists Neal, N5KCO with his badge."

N5JFQ says "Here is the Waco Chapter of the IOOK. Ron, AA5RT, is Hoss's (WA5ZAI) designated driver."

N5JFQ says "Hoss displays his good looks for an 80 year old."

W5JCS says "It is easy to see the respect and admiration we hold for Hoss just by the expression on Stan's face!"

N5JFQ says "Hoss and my wife, Liz (no call).  It doesn't him long to get a photo Op with the women."

W5JCS says "Here's Mike, N5MS, talking with Dan, K5FVL about HamVention."

N5JFQ says "Mike, N5MS, Jim, W5JCS, and Liz.  And another photo op with Liz."

W5JCS says "Here's Roger, WA5JXX, Hoss, WA5ZAI, Chas, KA5UPM and Ron, AA5RT"

N5JFQ says "Roger Ryan, WA5JXX, and Joe, WA5FLT, haven't seen each other in a long time."

W5JCS says "Here are a couple of Ham Radio T shirts!"

N5JFQ says "Al, AE5CJ, Joe and Hoss.  I have no idea what Hoss just purchased."

N5JFQ says "Jim, W5JCS, Chas, KA5UPM, and Joe, WA5FLT, are listening to Hoss tell a story."

N5JFQ says "Pop quiz:  Which pair of legs belong to Hoss?"

N5JFQ says "Jim is demonstrating his new Budipole antenna."

N5JFQ says "Joe thinks he is doing something wrong."

N5JFQ says "Now he is getting expert help from Dan, K5FVL."

N5JFQ says "Neal, N5KCO, shows off his new D-Star radio to Al and Joe.  Neal is the designated driver for the Calumet delegation."

N5JFQ says "Mike, Roger, Hoss and Chas take a photo op as we discuss plans for lunch."

N5JFQ says "Jim is being told to put up his Budipole so we can get lunch."

N5JFQ says "So we pull out the iPhone and search for the nearest barbecue restaurant which gives us a location less than a mile away.  So 4 car loads of IOOK'ers head out and turn into a business park only to find it is the corporate office.  We regroup and end up at Two Brothers Pizza."

de WA5FLT "Here's Roger, Chas and Mike"

N5JFQ says "Here's Joe enjoying a "Greek Salad."."

N5JFQ says "Hoss enjoys a slice of pizza while Jim waits on his hamburger with no onions."

Here's a photo of Hoss with a mouth full that Stan sent to Hoss but did not include in the stuff he sent in for the web page!  Hoss has no one to blame but himself for this making the web!

Stan and Liz

The place we found to eat had many international people watching on the big TV the World Soccer game Saturday.  The volume was up very loud.  It was difficult for us to hear and converse.  Dan, K5FVL stated, "I am a broadcast engineer.  I can fix this!"  He did.  He lost the signal completely and all that was on the TV was white noise!  It was funny.  The pizza boy had to come over, which took a few minutes as they were very busy, and the pizza boy was able to sort it out without the assistance of a broadcast engineer!  It was funny but you know how it is when we get together, everything is funny!  js

W5JCS says "Broadcast engineer now fixes the TV where there is NO signal and can't get it back to where it was."

Dan, K5FVL still trying to fix the TV.

Finally Pizza Boy is consulted by the Broadcast Engineer.

Pizza Boy fixes the TV - restores the image while Broadcast Engineer watches

W5JCS says "Here's the THINK TANK!"

L-R K5FVL (back to camera) AA5RT, WA5ZAI, WA5FLT, N5KCO, N5JFQ, Liz, WB5YFX (Wil)

W5JCs says "Hoss and Ron argue over who is going to pay the bill for their lunch!"

WA5FLT says "Here's the table after the feast!"  Ed. note - I'll bet they were all fed up!

WA5FLT says "We had a great time today.  A good crowd.  Here's Al catching a nap on the long trip home"

Jim, W5JCS, summarizes the hamfest for us by saying "It was a great hamfest.  The crowd was good and up noticeably from last year. The HamCom organizer's include 200 Boy Scouts who work on their Radio Merit Badge during HamCom which includes many demonstrations outside on the nice lawns.  There is an outside flea market, however, it closes down for the most part by late morning as the temperatures sky rocket on the concrete and heat of north Texas in June. "

Now it's time to think about the Ham-O-Rama the third weekend in October!
