W8REJ's 160 Meter Antenna

posting started 9/28/09

This is the 160M project I've been working on.  It consists of 120 inches of 2' PVC conduit, and then 96 inches of 1-1/2 PVC conduit, and topped with 78.5 inches of 1 inch PVC.

I am making it sectional so I can move it as needed.

It's wrapped with 256 ft 5 inches of number 12 MTW wire approximately 1/2 inch apart all the way to the top! (What a pain in the a#& !!)  I found out the ya need a REAL understanding wife for this part of the project, or, ya need to grow two more hands

It has quick connects between the sections.

The very top has a capacitance hat I made from two pieces of aluminum rod, bare copper, and wire crimps, soldered to hold them to the rods.  A conductor was wrapped and soldered in place, and that connects to a stud and the 12 MTW.

It will have 1/4 wavelength ground radials attached to the ground terminals, one on each side of the base, and run them as I can in my small yard.

Well, that's it for now.  I'll keep ya posted. I'm hoping to get it up and running next weekend.

DE WA8ZWJ - Next weekend indeed!  Time flies when you are in northwest lower Michigan!

Rob says "Here ya go gang..

It's up and seems to work okay, but, I really need to slap an analyzer on it... SWR is still high, and I'm running out of ground for radials!"

73 for now,

Rob, W8REJ

ed. note - Hey Rob!  Maybe the antenna has an issue with being that close to the chimney?  Maybe it would perform better freestanding in the yard?  Of course, with this type of construction, maybe it needs the added support so it cannot freestand?
