MSD & ZWJ Fish Lake Erie 6/09

Howdy from Catawba Island - which really isn't an island, but a peninsula - and we are probably closer to Marblehead....Ohio.

I stopped by Cabela's on my way here.  If you look at photo below you can see some the stuffed animals they have on display there.  Also, mid right there is a shot of Lee and Vicky.  Bottom left there is a shot of the Cast-A-Way in it's slip.  Finally there is a shot of Lee using the "Froggie" tape measure that Johnny gave a number of the guys a couple of HamVentions ago - he was measuring new leaders for our trolling outing the next morning.  (They usually drift fish and cast or bump bottom using live bait)

Lee and Vicky are staying at Little Ted's which is what I will call a fish camp - lots of folks here have either charter boat fishing trips or have a slip for their boat while they are here.

Lee and Vicky have been here nearly 2 weeks now.  I arrived after driving through pouring rain until I got to Ann Arbor!  Even though they had caught a few nice Walleye, they were frustrated in that they had not caught very many Walleye and were having difficulty finding them.  They were fishing long hours and not showing much for it.  Lee asked the right question at the right place apparently.  He got to know Larry Lambert, a charter boat captain.  Larry told Lee and I all about how to troll for Walleye and made a few suggestions on where we ought to try fishing.  He even loaned Lee some equipment and sold him some planer boards.

Tuesday morning we were on the lake bright and early.

We set up and began to troll.  As you look at the photo below you will see Lee with a small Walleye (top right) and in the middle left you will see a set of the planer boards that pull the baits away from the boat as we troll.  Middle right you can see my Freshwater Drum, which is also known as a Sheepshead and more  - see the following link to learn about Freshwater Drum.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Freshwater_drum  The one shown here was 28 inches long and qualified me for a "Fish Ohio" certificate.  (for more information about the Fish Ohio program click on the following link:  http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/ Home/FishingSubhomePage/ programs__ activitiesplaceholder/ fishingrecordfish_ fshohiofishoho/tabid/6140/ Default.aspx)  Next you see a couple of the first day Walleye's.

As you look at the shot below you can see the fruits of our efforts on Tuesday with a total of 8 Walleye!  Pretty incredible!

Tuesday evening we stopped by the Marblehead Lighthouse and then we had a delightful dinner at Dianna's Diner.

Wednesday morning we were out and at'em bright and early again!  As you look at the panel below you will see one of the ferry boat's that pass among the assorted islands.  Then you will see my 29 1/4 inch 9 pound 3 ounce "Fish Ohio" Walleye.  Then there is a shot of Lee and a nice Walleye and then another to show you just how small a fish can actually get hooked on our lures!  We managed to put 11 in the box on Wednesday.

As you look at the photo below you can compare the size of the fish to the beer can on the top rail.  Yes, we did get some light rain Wednesday so we are wearing rain gear!

Wednesday evening we ate dinner at Traveler's Friendly Restaurant!  Delicious!

Thursday morning even brighter and even earlier (OK - it really was darker and earlier - we were at the dock before the sun was up) we headed out.  It started drizzling about the time we got started and drizzled rain all morning.  That did not dampen our spirits, however.  We managed to "limit out" by 11AM.  The limit is 6 each!  Yee haw!

Tonight's dinner was at the Jolly Roger.  Incredible Perch dinner!  As you can imagine, in true I.O.O.K. fashion, we have managed to get "fed up" on a regular basis!  Yep, the IOOK travels on it's stomach!

Here are my Fish Ohio catches and certificates

Many thanks to Lee and Vicky for their hospitality and a great fishing trip and visit!  I can hardly wait for Salmon season late in August!

I head home tomorrow, so, this will be the last update for a couple of weeks before we head north once more!

TTFN,

Keith
